Dr. Sullivan is back from his trip to Guatemala last week. He volunteered a week of his time to the Spear Openwide Foundation dental clinic. What a great experience for him! Here’s what he said about it on facebook and some photos to share - ” Have been in Guatemala past several days providing some much needed dental services in the community of Peroina. I am honored to be associated with a great group of service minded professionals through Spear Open Wide Foundation. These kind people of guatemala are appreciative, humble& happy, yet have very little. Many of the patients I saw had never seen a Dentist ever!” You can see more photos on our facebook page under sheldon sullivan dds, artistry in dentistry.

Cosmetic Dentist vs. General Dentist
Monday, 2/6/2012 7:51:27 PM | sullivandds
What’s the difference between a general and a cosmetic dentist? Can a general dentist be a cosmetic dentist or vice versa? Well, there’s a big difference and yes, they can be one in the same. When a dentist leaves dental school they are a “general dentist”. A general dentist is focused on the diagnoses, prevention and treatment of oral disease and broken or decayed teeth. In general they fix what is broken, maintain dental health and keep your teeth in good working order.
Some general dentists may choose to have a practice focused on cosmetic dentistry. So you may ask yourself, “what makes a good general dentist a good cosmetic dentist?”. If a dentist wants to specialize in an area such as oral surgery or periodontics, they have to attend several more years of school and receive more specialized training in that specific area of dentistry. But since cosmetic dentistry isn’t recognized as a dental specialty, and there is no “school” for the specialty. So where do dentist get the training?
A cosmetic dentist usually receives additional training through courses and programs specific to cosmetic dentistry. The cosmetic dentists’ focus is on enhancing the patients smile and the aesthetic appearance of their teeth. What sets a good cosmetic dentist apart from other is that they are an artist. He or she has an eye for the aesthetics of dentistry and what makes a smile look natural and beautiful.
Dr. Sullivan has not only completed hours of training in cosmetic procedures and now mentors other dentists and lectures all around the country, he is an artist at heart. Over the years, he has refined and honed the ability to look at a smile and instantly know what combination of aesthetic techniques is required to maximize its beauty.
In aesthetic dentistry, Dr. Sullivan has a highly regarded reputation as a cosmetic dentist and will leave no stone unturned in his goal to maximize the potential of your smile. Dr. Sullivan considers a wide variety of factors, including:
•Contours — of your lips, gums and teeth
•Arrangement — how your teeth fit together to create your smile
•Teeth Characteristics — position, size, shape, length, width, angle and axial inclination
•The Shape of Your Face — square, round, long, wide, high, oval, etc.
•Personality — plays a significant role in the ideally matching smile
•Lifestyle — as Dr. Sullivan likes to say, “You can’t take a Porsche off-roading!”
•Weight, Gender & Age — all play a role in your new smile

Here at Dr. Sullivan’s office, we strive to make sure that our patients have a great experience in our office every time they come. When you come in for your first visit, you may have an experience unlike any other that you’ve had in other dental offices. We want you to know what you can expect when you arrive at our office for your first visit.
First, you will be greeted with a smile and a warm welcome by Dawn or Jennifer and offered a bottle of cold water. While you are in our reception area you can enjoy the calming sound of our waterfall and relax with our foot massager.
We will give you a tour of our office so that you’re familiar and comfortable with your surroundings. You will meet our clinical staff and be introduced to your hygienist, Brittany or Ashley, who will be taking care of you.
Here at Dr. Sullivan’s office we are very thorough in our diagnostic procedures. The first thing your hygienist will do is review your medical history and listen to any concerns or questions that you have. She will take a complete set of diagnostic x-rays and photos. At this time, because we want you to be comfortable, we offer a flavored lip balm, a warm neck roll, and a warm paraffin hand wax.
Your hygienist will perform an oral cancer screening as well as an exam to determine any existing dental work that you may have and assess the health of you gum tissue. She will show you the x-rays and photos of your teeth and discuss her findings with you as well as any concerns or questions that you have. They will also determine the best dental hygiene procedure for you and keep you informed of everything that she is doing.
Once Brittany or Ashley has completed your hygiene, you will meet Dr. Sullivan. As he proceeds with his comprehensive exam, your hygienist will share with him any concerns that they have noted during their time with you. Once Dr. Sullivan has made his diagnoses and answered any questions that you have, your hygienist will explain your treatment to you and schedule your next appointment. Our treatment coordinator will go over the fees and any insurance that may help you with your visit.
We want you to be a partner in your dental care so we do everything possible to make sure that you have all the information you need to make informed decisions about your dental health.
To make sure that you have a great day we offer you a freshly baked cookie as you leave our office. We’re glad that you came and are grateful that you’re part of our practice family, and look forward to seeing you again.
