Tooth Brushing Tips

June 11, 2021

We’ve been brushing our teeth since we were kids, and now we even teach our kids how to brush their teeth. We think we know everything we need to do it right, but do we? Believe it or not, there is more to it than you might think.

First, you need the right tool for the job. A toothbrush should have soft bristles and be the right size to reach every part of your mouth. Be sure to replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months, and even sooner if the bristles are worn out.
Time is of the essence. You need to spend at least two minutes brushing your teeth. Most adults don’t spend near that amount of time, so get in the habit of taking those two minutes. Brush least twice a day. For the best results, hold your brush at a 45-degree angle. Brush the outer, then the inner surfaces of your teeth. Then clean the chewing surfaces. Brush your teeth gently, in short strokes, and don’t forget to brush your tongue.

There is no shortage of toothpaste brands. They range from cavity-fighting toothpastes, to those for sensitive teeth; and there are many more. One of the most important things in choosing a toothpaste is to make sure that it contains fluoride. Since every mouth is different, it’s always a good idea to have a talk with your dentist about which toothpaste and toothbrush is best for you.

We invite you to visit us at Artistry in Dentistry in Gilbert, Arizona to talk with Dr.Sheldon Sullivan and Dr. Shawn Monahan about the dental care products that will work for you, and for tips on daily dental care. We’ll be happy to show you the ins and outs of brushing and flossing! Call us today at 602-492-9003.
